As the world moves to contain and extinguish Covid-19, our regular face to face meetings are not possible. However, we believe that the work that Rotarians perform is too important and far too valuable to be put on hold during this time. As such, for as long as we can’t meet in person, the Darlings will be meeting digitally.

This week, our presenter will be Fi Shewing. To support existing tradeswomen and advocate for change Fiona started Supporting And Linking Tradeswomen (SALT), a non-profit organisation working to change the status quo for tradeswomen and encourage girls and women to consider a career in trade.

SALT began in Wollongong with seven tradeswomen and now works nationally across Australia. It has always been inclusive and works to create a professional and accepting culture in the trades for all people.

Major initiatives of SALT are the mobile workshops which teach women of all ages how to use a cordless drill and other hand and small power tools. These workshops are unique in the world and are held in schools and communities to introduce trades as an alternative career path. They particularly encourage young women to broaden their horizons and actively design their careers. SALT also teaches boys and men whenever possible.

For many years SALT tradies, both female and male, have volunteered and worked to support farmers dealing with the terrible effects of severe drought. This is now being broadened out to help with other disasters.

To join, simply visit https://rotarydarlings.my.webex.com/meet/drew. This meeting is open to everyone, and we all hope to see you there.

If you have any questions, please direct them to it@rotarydarlingharbour.org.au.

Otherwise, we look forward to your participation in our new meeting format.

This is a virtual meeting, which means we won’t be paying for our normal meal. If you’d like to use the money you’d normally spend on that meal to make the world a better place, please visit our Chuffed page at https://chuffed.org/project/darlingsprojects

Together, we can continue to provide important service to the people we work with.
