The Darling: 19/7/2021

Dear members and friends of the Rotary Club of Sydney Darling Harbour,

This is ordinarily where I include my observations from the past week, insert some light humour and generally explain why, for the next week especially, I am so excited to be a member of the Rotary Club of Sydney Darling Harbour! I understand that, for most readers, this is the clear highlight of the newsletter. This week, however, we will have to skip all that in lieu of an important announcement – The Rotary Club of Sydney Darling Harbour now uses Zoom for its meetings.

For the past 18 or so months COVID-19, the Club used WebEx. This served us well and allowed us to quickly facilitate digital meetings. However, with Zoom becoming the de facto standard for the District and our neighbouring Clubs, the Darlings have moved over as well. For you, our treasured members and guests, nothing much should change. As with WebEx, we will use the same meeting link for all digital meetings. We’ve actually even made it easier – to join our upcoming digital meetings, simply visit https://rotarydarlingharbour.org.au/zoom
You can add that link to your bookmarks, it’s never going to change.

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Club Forums are an opportunity to discuss the Club’s plans for the upcoming year, and for members and guests to provide their feedback and suggestions. As this is the first Club Forum of the year, it represents an excellent opportunity to shape the Club’s work for the next 12 months, and determine the causes and efforts we wish to put a spotlight on.  This meeting is open to everyone, and we all hope to see you there. Digital Evening Meeting – 5/8/2021: Youth Homelessness
August 5, 2021 at 6:30 pm
Digital Event

Homelessness is an issue that our Club has been involved in for years, as the homeless are often the most vulnerable members of our society. When it impacts our youth, the ramifications can be even more significant and can trap individuals in lives plagued by mental illness, food insecurity and decreased opportunities to pull themselves out of this difficult situation. In this evening meeting, we will be discussing how the Darlings can best get involved in the important area of Youth Homelessness, and what support we can provide to existing organisations to help them deliver better outcomes for their residents.

Recent News

Volunteering as an ACCESS Mentor

At our last meeting, we lucky enough to be joined by Carly Hussey from WAGEC who explained the important work that they’re actively involved in. Carly has asked us to share that WAGEC are reopening applications for volunteer ACCESS mentors during November and December of this year and they’d love to see any of our members apply.

If you are passionate about supporting women and families escaping domestic violence, and would like to be involved in a continuing basis in helping them rebuild, this would be a great opportunity. The best way to receive the invitation to apply is by signing up to their newsletter via their website and following them on social media.

Final Thoughts

In 1695 the English parliament passed a law to tax all bachelors over the age of 25. The Bachelor Tax was later abolished in 1706.

Well, that’s it from me. Don’t forget that our next meeting is scheduled for 7.30AM on Wednesday the 28th of July, taking place online. For more information, including how to access the meeting remotely, please visit https://rotarydarlingharbour.org.au/events/digital-club-meeting-28-7-2021/

Until next week,
