Dear members and friends of the Rotary Club of Sydney Darling Harbour,

It’s hard to believe, but life is slowly returning to normal. I’ve chaired two physical meetings as President, I’ve been back into my office and I’ve even sat in a cafe and drank a cup of coffee. Truly, the things that we’ve missed for more than two years are coming back.

In that spirit, I’ve very happy to confirm that we will be helping out at the 2022 Sydney Rotary ANZAC Day BBQ. This is always a fantastic day where we’re in front of public, honouring the members of our armed services, and working alongside our Rotary colleagues. The BBQ is scheduled for ANZAC Day on the 25th of April, and if you would like to get involved please register to volunteer at https://rotarydarlingharbour.org.au/events/anzac-day-parade-volunteering-2022/.

As the world re-opens we have a lot of other events to look forward to. The best way to stay informed is to head into our meetings on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.

And don’t forget the Rotary Conference, occurring this weekend at The Warwick. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased at https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=808939.

Rotary District 9675 Conference – 2022
March 18, 2022 at 8:00 am
The Warwick

Each year, the Clubs within the District meet for District Conference. This gives exposure to ongoing District and Rotary International projects, allows us to set strategic direction for the year ahead and, most importantly, provides an opportunity for us to talk shop and socialise with our colleagues in other Clubs. After almost two years of intermittent lock-downs and restricted opportunities face to face, the District Conference should be a welcome opportunity to catch up with old friends, strike up new conversations with Rotarians we’ve not met, and help make the next Rotary year even brighter than the one preceding it. To purchase your ticket, please visit https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=808939.

International Toast

This week, we’re toasting the Rotary Club of Montreal, Canada. Founded in 1913, they are the oldest Rotary Club in Canada, with their main area of expertise and activity being International water projects. They have partnered with hundreds of Rotary Clubs in carrying out projects in over 30 countries, and actively seek to share their experience and expertise with other Clubs.

Like us, they are morning Club, and meeting Fridays at 7.15AM.

Cheers to you, Rotary Club of Montreal!

This Day in History

On March 14th, 1900, the US adopted by the Gold Standard after their congress passed the Currency Act.

Final Thoughts

Spaces between words in documents first appeared in Irish and Anglo-Saxon Bibles in the seventh century. Paleographers today identify the extinction of ‘scriptio continua’ as a critical factor in augmenting the widespread absorption of knowledge in the Pre-Modern Era.

Well, that’s it from me. Don’t forget that our next meeting will be held digitally, on the 23rd of March. For more information, including how to join our Zoom, please visit https://rotarydarlingharbour.org.au/events/digital-club-meeting-23-3-2022/.

Until next week,
Drew Sturgiss
