Dear Members and Friends of the Rotary Club of Sydney Darling Harbour,

The virtual meeting last week was great opportunity to hear the amazing work that the Darlings are engaged in impacting both our local and international community. The next in person meeting on the February 8 will have one of our prospective members Rachael talking about different aspects of her role as a cardiac surgical nurse. Additionally two of the RYLA attendees will be presenting about their experience at the RYLA camp and how it has impacted them.

Mel Lane provided an update on our KIVA account at the last virtual meeting. Through our KIVA account (https://www.kiva.org/lender/rotarydarlingharbour) we just donated to an additional 15 micro-loans to 15 different countries! Many people in developing countries don’t have access to loans, particularly women. These loans facilitate sanitation, entrepreneurship, and community development, leading to positive outcomes for recipients their families and society. Our Rotary account has been supporting micro-loans for over 10 years, below is an example of one of the loans that was recently funded:

These 16 women are part of the group that has been created in 2011. Madame Khady, standing to the right of the photo with her hand raised, is the representative. She is single with no children. She is 27 years old. She runs a catering business. She has a good experience in the field. With this loan, she plans to buy her supplies wholesale. Every morning she prepares dishes that she offers in her village for breakfast. With her profit she supports herself entirely, as she is disabled and she does not have a husband yet.

Final Thoughts

As we get our mix of hot humid days and days with rain did you know Australia has two of the world’s Top 10 most beautiful and brightest sand beaches:

  • Hyam’s Beach on the south coast is the most whitish brilliant natural sand beach. The sand on the beach gets very hot and it is difficult to walk barefoot on a hot day.
  • Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays is the most whitish brilliant silica sand beach. The silica sand disperses heat and you do not get your bare feet burnt on a hot day.

Join us at our in person meeting to hear from Racheal, Ajit and Artun on February 8th at 6PM. For more information https://rotarydarlingharbour.org.au/events/virtual-meeting-25-01-2023/

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our first formal in person meeting next week,

Nishant Samuel
